Comics Underground is a staged reading—only the performers read dialogue from their own comics, with images projected above them. Performers provide their own soundtracks, sound effects, live music—whatever they want, really.
It’s in a bar, it’s pretty informal, and past installments have featured things like extemporaneous guitar accompaniment and broken-window sound effects, courtesy of a bottle scrounged from behind the bar. This month's performers include:
Two all-around hilarious dudes, Jeff Parker and Ben Dewey are studiomates at local comics hub Periscope Studio, where they collaborated on a Planet of the Apes story. Yes. That means this Comics Underground will feature talking monkeys. With guns!
Nationally syndicated political cartoonist Matt Bors was short-listed for a Pulitzer earlier this year. Political comics? At Comics Underground? How timely and relevant!
Leia Weathington and Erika Moen are two local creators who teamed up on the very adults-only story "Easy," for the lady-friendly anthology Smut Peddler. We repeat: Adults only. Excellent.
Up-and-coming cartoonist Lucy Bellwood recently raised more than $10,000 on Kickstarter to fund her autobiographical comic True Believer. This fact should give you some idea how good True Believer is.
