Comics Underground
Admission: 3.00
21+ only
Comics Underground is a staged reading—only the performers read dialogue from their own comics, with images projected above them. Performers provide their own soundtracks, sound effects, live music—whatever they want, really. It’s in a bar, it’s pretty informal, and they’ve been known to feature things like extemporaneous guitar accompaniment and broken-window sound effects, courtesy of a bottle scrounged from behind the bar.
• BEN DEWEY, artist and creator of the hilarious The Tragedy Series, which provides inspirational reminders that things could always be worse.
• SUZETTE SMITH, cartoonist and all-around fetching gal whose work appears weekly in the Portland Mercury.
• SARA RYAN, young adult novelist (Empress of the World), librarian, and comics writer currently at work on a graphic novel.
• MATT FRACTION, Architect of the Marvel Universe, writer of The Invincible Iron Man, and creator of the beloved high-concept spy comic Casanova.
