Stiv Wilson: Plastic Crusader
7:00pm - 10:00pm
Pacific Crest Community School
116 Northeast 29th Avenue
Portland, OR 97232-3202
Pacific Crest Community School is hosting an evening with environmental activist, Stiv Wilson of the 5 Gyres Institute and Surfrider Foundation. Stiv has recently returned from the South Atlantic where he researched one of the five oceanic gyres. A gyre is a system of rotating currents that swirl around and are now filling with plastic debris from all over the world. The North Pacific gyre has gotten a lot of attention from the media recently as a “floating trash island twice the size of Texas,” and is one of many reasons for Senate Bill 536 to ban plastic bags in the whole state of Oregon. Stiv will be speaking about the five gyres, the environmental effects of plastic pollution and strategies to eliminate the accumulation of plastic pollution.
