It seems somewhat appropriate to call Paul Thomas Anderson's epic, unofficial adaptation of the life of John Holmes "ballsy," and not just for the obvious pun: It's no small task, resurrecting (however briefly) the career of Burt Reynolds while balancing two decades worth of decadence on the shoulders of a man best known for splitting his strenuous underwear model career with his side-job performing bubble-gum rap at state fairs.
And not only did Boogie Nights lead many to discover Mark Wahlberg's huge talent (ahem) it assembled one of the best ensembles of the last 20 years: Julianne Moore, John C. Reilly, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Don Cheadle, Thomas Jane, Heather Graham, William H. Macy, and Alfred Molina as a cokeheaded, bathrobe-wearing firecracker enthusiast. And that's not even getting into the soundtrack: Yeah, there's The Commodores, and Melanie, Marvin Gaye, the Beach Boys, and Night Ranger, but all pale in comparison to Wahlberg's own cover of "The Touch" from Transformers: The Movie.
