How is News Made? Walking Tour

How does journalism contribute to public life? What is the media's civic responsibility? Join the Dill Pickle Club for How Is News Made? as we examine these issues and explore the ecology of the local news media.
The tour will start with a visit to Portland's top-ranked TV station, KGW NewsChannel 8. Here, we will tour the station's control room, television studios and news operations. Representatives from the station will speak to the balance between investigative journalism and the need for television ratings.
Next, we'll visit the Oregonian offices to meet with Therese Bottomly and Susan Gage, the paper's managing editors, who will give an overview of the history and operations of the paper. We will also meet with representatives from Oregon Live, who will talk about the relationship of the site to the newspaper, and provide insight as to how dramatically the industry has changed in recent years.
The tour will end with a discussion with local experts on new media. Portland Mercury Reporter Sarah Mirk, Willamette Week Special Projects Reporter Corey Pein and Urban Honking Co-founder Mike Merrill will lead a panel on blogging, recent changes in news production and the future of journalism.
