According to tradition, Scottish Highland Games had their beginning when originated by the kings and chiefs of Scotland as a reasonable agreement method of choosing the best men at arms. Crude forms of the athletic events you see today were developed to test the constants for strength, stamina, accuracy and agility.
The Portland Highland Games Association's goal is to bring Portland the finest Scottish Highland Games possible. Loosely based upon the founding statement of the St. Andrew's Society, a similar goal of our Games could well be stated: "to preserve the memories of our Scottish inheritance while serving our American community."
Sample of the events you can see:
- World-class Highland dancing and solo piping competitions on the field.
- Celtic musicians perform for you on the entertainment stage.
- Who's the strongest Scotsman or woman? Watch the heavy athletics and caber toss.
- Children's games, sheepdog demonstrations, fiddling competitions and genealogy workshops too.
And no Scottish event would be without a Ceilidh to finish off the day. You can relax with competitors and enjoy a pint of MacTarnahan's beer or a wee dram. Check out Saturday's schedule of events to plan your day.
